Ketchikan alaska

If you enjoy sailing, come spend thirteen nights / fourteen days sailing with Gypsy Wind from Juneau to Ketchikan. On this trip you will get to take some time to really enjoy the wilderness and wildlife Alaska has to offer as well as get some serious sailing time in. During this trip you will get to go Whale watching, birding, view sea lions, go on nature hikes, forage for wild edibles, fish for salmon (halibut is additional cost), kayak through the wilderness as well as through icebergs, and view some of the most beautiful glaciers you will ever see.

In the Spring this trip would pick up in Ketchikan and drop off in Juneau (North Bound).  In the fall we would pick up in Juneau and drop off in Ketchikan(South Bound).  In the itinerary below it will show the trip going South, the stops will all be the same in reverse if going North.

Day One.

Pick up in Juneau.  Sail for around 6 hours to our first anchorage.  While we sail enjoy dinner and as always keep a look out for whales!!

Day Two.

While eating breakfast we will sail to Dawes Glacier.  This is a tide water glacier,  we will be navigating through ice far before we can see the glacier. This is a great place to take a kayak out and enjoy some time near this majestic glacier.  Have dinner while underway to Wood Spit for the night.

Day Three.

Sail to Brothers Island, about a 5 hour trip. Have lunch at anchor. Take the afternoon to go kayaking, whale watching from the tender, fishing or exploring the island!

Day Four.

After a nice breakfast we will sail about 2 hours to Hey Bear Falls.  This is a nice anchorage with a hike that ends at Hey Bear Falls, a beautiful water fall!  There is also a big salmon stream here which makes it a great place to watch eagles and bear feeding.

Day Five.

We will leave in the early morning for a 6 hour trip to Portage Bay.  This bay has a old logging road with a small dock making it really easy to disembark from the tender and take a nice walk though the woods.  It is a very protected bay and perfect for exploring by kayak, take a fishing rod and catch arctic char!

Day Six.

In the morning we will head 22 miles to Baird Glacier.  We will anchor in Scenery Cove for the day and explore this glacier!!  Then head about an hour sail to a beautiful overnight anchorage.

Day Seven.

Have Breakfast underway to Le Conte Glacier about a 4 hour sail.  Take the day and explore another amazing glacier.  Then head to Ideal Cove for a quite evening.

Day Eight.

We will pick up the anchor early and get moving towards the Wrangle Narrows.  This is a very small and winding channel that is a challenge to navigate through.  It will take us about 6 hours to get though this area and too our next anchorage at St. Johns Harbor.  We will arrive just after lunch and have plenty of time to explore this area.

Day Nine.

Sail just over 5 hours to Olive Cove.  Take the afternoon to explore this area, there is a nice creek and meadow to walk through.  Take time to relax and enjoy!

Day Ten

Have Breakfast underway to Vixen inlet.  This sail is just under 5 hours, we will be anchored just before lunch.  This inlet is know for a large population of black bears.  Take the afternoon to observe these magnificent animal from a kayak, the dinghy or go for a walk around the meadows!

Day Eleven To Day Fourteen!

Sail  7 hours into Ketchikan.  This is where your trip will end.  There is still 3 Days left of your trip!!  Because of the large distance we have to travel we factor these extra three days in so we can wait out bad weather at any point during out trip.  If we are lucky and get good weather for the whole trip then you get to choose three of your favorite anchorages and stay an extra night!!
