alaskan hiking

Hiking in Southeast Alaska is some of the best in the world and also some of the most unique. Most of the trails are animal trails.  Always keep your eyes open for the animals that created these amazing trails. We also spend a lot of time hiking along streams looking for the next great fishing hole or looking for a bears and eagle’s feeding on salmon.

While near the Glaciers we can sometimes hike up along the side of the glacier and get a great view of the top of the glaciers.  This can be a very difficult climb due to the steep terrain, but the views from the top are worth the effort!

One of our favorite hikes is on Lemesurier Island.  We anchor at Jacks cove, head to the pebbly beach then head into the woods.  We fallow the creek into the woods which leads us to the head of the trail.  It is about a 6 mile hike up to the top of the island, through deep forests.  In late summer this is one of the best places to collect mushrooms! After the long hike you get to a lake at the top of the trail it is beautiful and well worth the hike.  Alaska forest service has a canoe at the edge of the lake that we can use to explore the lake or go fishing for trout!

The crew of Gypsy Wind love to go hiking at every place we stop, you never know what you will find or see while exploring the beaches, rivers, meadows and forests.  While we walk around we always keep a look out for wild edible’s, including beach asparagus, devils club buds, fiddle head ferns, spruce tips, mushrooms, salmon berries, blue berries, nagoon berries, high bush cranberries, rasberries and wild strawberries.  We love to collect all these and make a great meal or snack.  Come join us and enjoy the delicious wild foods and explore these remote places!
