Shape the Next Generation of Sailors
Real boats. Real skills. Real adventure.
Apply to Join Ship 226What Are Sea Scouts?
Sea Scouts is a program of Scouting America for young men and women ages 14–20, built around responsible fun, adventure, and the development of real maritime skills. The mission is to prepare youth to make ethical choices throughout their lifetimes by instilling the values of the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and the Sea Promise.
Unlike classroom learning, Sea Scouts earn their skills on the water — handling lines, reading charts, standing watch, and working as a crew. This high-adventure program provides excitement, leadership, nautical skills, and character development in a social environment where participants make lifelong friends.
Sea Scout Ship 226
Ship 226 is one of the only youth sailing programs in Snohomish County and has been a charter organization of the Milltown Sailing Association for over ten years. We are a highly active group of young adults dedicated to having fun on the water — and we mean it.
What do Sea Scouts Do? We have fun!
Navigation
Chart reading, GPS, compass work, and passage planning on real offshore routes.
Seamanship
Line handling, sail trim, anchoring, docking, and vessel maintenance on a 72-foot yacht.
Sailing
Hands-on time at the helm, crewing in all conditions, and offshore passages in Pacific Northwest waters.
Safety & First Aid
Man-overboard drills, emergency procedures, and marine first aid in real-world scenarios.
Leadership
Scouts take on crew roles with real responsibility — from watch captain to navigator.
Teamwork
A boat only works when the crew works together. Scouts learn to communicate, trust, and lead.
Ship 226 — What We're All About
Ship 226 is a highly active group of young adults dedicated to having fun on the water. We sail every Tuesday, rain or shine. Once a month we organize an overnight sail to a nearby island or marina, and every summer we embark on our signature "Long Cruise" — a two-week adventure to the San Juan Islands, Canada, or Alaska.
We race sailboats competitively, including the MSA Log Dodge races and NWISA high school dinghy regattas. In fact, Ship 226 recently broke the Cannonball record — circumnavigating Vancouver Island aboard Gypsy Wind in just 5 days, 6 hours, and 6 minutes, covering over 600 miles.
If you want to learn to sail, this is the right place. Our fleet includes a Boston Whaler for water skiing, fishing, and crabbing; a 37-foot Beneteau for racing; a 42-foot Hallberg-Rassy for Alaska passages; and our flagship Gypsy Wind — a floating classroom that comes fully equipped with a hot tub, an ice cream maker, and yes, a pizza oven.
Sea Scouts is a youth-run high adventure program — and "Mandatory Fun" is strictly enforced.
How Gypsy Wind Supports Ship 226
Gypsy Wind Charters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Sea Scout Ship 226 is at the heart of our mission. We provide Ship 226 with access to a 72-foot offshore sailing vessel — the kind of platform most youth programs could never dream of.
Scouts sail on the same boat that takes paying charter guests to Alaska and Mexico. There's no "training boat" — just the real thing, with real stakes and real rewards.
